Career and Training

Dr Brown graduated from the University of Sheffield in the UK with degrees in Medical Science, Medicine and Surgery before undertaking surgical training in the Southwest Peninsular. He trained at several oncoplastic units in Southwest England and was awarded FRCS(Eng) and placed on the GMC’s Specialist Register. He moved to Australia to undertake a two year fellowship in Breast Surgery at the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute. Dr Brown also undertook fellowships in general and upper gastrointestinal surgery and was awarded FRACS in 2019.

In addition to his UK surgical training and Australian Fellowship, Dr Brown recieved a Master of Surgery degree from the University of East Anglia and gained Fellowship of the European Board of Surgery in Breast Surgery. Dr Brown has trained extensively in breast surgery and reconstruction and is a member of the Association of Breast Surgery in the UK as well as Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand (BreastSurgANZ). He has undertaken numerous courses in oncoplastic breast surgery, breast reconstruction, augmentation and reduction.

Dr Brown is currently a Consultant at Wellington Regional Hospital and BreastScreen Aotearoa. As well as treating elective and emergency patients he is involved in the training and education of the next generation of surgeons. As the Surgical Superintendent at Westmead Hospital he also sat on several governance and safety committees, and continually contributes to improvements in patients care.  In addition, Dr Brown teaches medical students in Wellington at the University of Otago and remains a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney.

Research

Research is an essential component of any surgeon’s career and Dr Brown has interests in fat grafting and outcomes of breast cancer surgery as well as optimising opportunities for his patients to be involved in international studies. He has published several academic papers in both breast and general surgery, including breast reconstruction, fat grafting and patient safety.
